HENNIKER, N.H. (AP) – A husband and wife who lived with five children among animal waste and rotting food received suspended three-month jail terms and were placed on probation for two years.

Henniker District Court Judge Brackett Scheffy, who earlier found Wendy and Byron Ruff guilty of 10 counts of child endangerment, imposed the sentence Thursday.

The Ruffs’ lawyer said he would appeal the conviction.

Scheffy, who had described the home as “deplorable,” said Thursday he had no particular desire to punish the couple but rather to avoid a repeat of the squalid conditions.

Scheffy said the couple will have to submit to unannounced inspections of their home by health and probation officers.

The Ruffs were charged in August after Warner’s health inspector condemned their home, finding it full of garbage and animal waste, with no food for the children. The state veterinarian seized 37 animals.

The family moved back into the home when volunteers helped clean it up and made some repairs.
