INDIANAPOLIS – University of Maine at Farmington geology professor Tom Eastler has been named head coach of the 2006 USA World Cup Racewalk Team by the National office of USA Track and Field (USATF).

Eastler will lead a contingent of 25 athletes, an assistant coach, team manager, trainer, physical therapist, sports psychologist, to La Coruna, Spain for the May 13-14 World Cup racewalk competition. The weekend-long World Cup competition will include a 50- and 20-kilometer men’s race, a 20-kilometer women’s race, a 10km junior men’s race, and a 10km junior women’s race.

Eastler is not new to coaching USA national racewalk teams. He was the 2000 USA Pan American Cup racewalk head coach in Poza Rica, Mexico, and the 2002 USA World Cup racewalk team head coach in Turin, Italy.

Eastler and his Maine Racewalkers Club have educated thousands of youth and adults around the country about racewalking. Several Maine racewalkers, graduates of the Maine high school track and field program, the only one of its kind in the United States, have made national teams, Olympic trials, and even the Olympics in racewalking over the last decade.
