LEWISTON – The 2006 Abnaki District Friends of Scouting Kick-off Campaign began with a “Breakfast with the Lewiston Maineiacs” on Jan. 24 at the Colisee.

The event represents its annual Community Campaign Leadership gathering. The campaign provides an opportunity for community members to gain an understanding of the accomplishments and goals of the local Boy Scouts of America – Abnaki District. In addition, the campaign provides community members with information regarding volunteer opportunities in the district.

Maineiacs team members in attendance were left-wing player Derek Bailey of Plymouth, Mass., and Chris Tutalo, right-wing player, of Roscoe, N.J. Tutalo provided a summary of activities that took place in the Abnaki District during 2005.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by local Eagle Scout Nick Boyeau of Troop 116, Lewiston. Boyeau shared his goals and experience with the Boy Scouts. Other Scouts attending were Jared Lucier and Jacob Reed. Maineiacs tickets and a hockey stick (signed by members of the Maineiacs team) were presented the three.

Mike Williams, Friends of Scouting campaign chairman, welcomed guests and commented on the commitment displayed by community businesses and opportunities for expanded partnerships.

In 2005, the Abnaki District achieved its second consecutive quality district award by gaining new members in overall Scouting units; 735 Cub Scouts attended day camp across the Pine Tree Council, including 97 who attended Camp Gustin in Sabattus; 1,604 Scouts attended Camp Hinds Residence Camp in Raymond, including 208 from the Abnaki District; and 850 Scouts and adults attended district events such as the Klondike Derby, Camporees, Cub rallies and the Pinewood Derby.
