MOULTONBOROUGH, N.H. (AP) – A Massachusetts man died after trying to cross open water while snowmobiling on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire on Sunday, authorities said.
Daniel Harper, 51, of Bellingham, Mass. was in a party of about five snowmobilers when he tried “skimming” across open water near Bryant Point in Moultonborough just after noon, Lt. Jim Goss of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said.
Harper didn’t make it across and his friends pulled him from the water, Goss said.
Local fire and rescue personnel as well as conservation officers performed CPR on Harper but he was pronounced dead at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia, Goss said.
Trying to cross open water on a snowmobile, called “skimming,” is illegal in New Hampshire, Goss said.
