NEWPORT CITY, Vt. (AP) – A man and woman were rescued after falling through the ice on an ATV on Lake Memphremagog.
The pair, whose names have not been released, were rescued by firefighters in an ice boat Wednesday.
The young man and women were taken to the hospital after spending about 20 minutes in near freezing water, said Newport City Fire Chief Robert George.
“We were fortunate to be able to get them out,” George said.
They were riding an ATV in the middle of the southern end of the lake when the machine broke through the ice, police said. A brother of one of the victims was able to call police and a fire dispatcher by radio, George said.
The warm weather has created hazardous conditions for ice fishermen and others who travel on the lake this time of year, with thin ice and patches of open water, George said.
The ice was about an inch thick where the pair fell through, he said.
