BAR HARBOR (AP) – David Hales, an environmental advocate who served in the Clinton and Carter administrations, has been named the fifth president of College of the Atlantic, the school announced Monday.

Hales will succeed Steven Katona, a founding faculty member who plans to retire June 30 after 34 years at the college, including 13 as president.

A promoter of sustainable development, Hales has served most recently as counsel for sustainability policy to Worldwatch Institute, an independent research organization focused on energy, resource and environmental issues.

Earlier in his career he held posts with the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Department of the Interior and was on the faculty of the University of Michigan.

College of the Atlantic, located at the edge of Acadia National Park, is a small liberal arts college offering degrees in human ecology.

A search committee has worked since spring to review applicants. Hales’ appointment was approved Saturday by college trustees.
