LEWISTON – American Legion Post 22 Service Officer Joseph Paradis has announced eligibility dates for the three-way membership drive, which will go into high gear at the post meeting night at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at the old Legion hall, 190 Bates St.

Veterans, sons of veterans and women who meet the following conditions are eligible to join: World War I veterans, April 6, 1917, to Nov. 11, 1918; World War II, Dec. 7, 1941, to Dec. 31, 1946; Korea, June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955; Vietnam, Dec. 22, 1961, to May 7, 1975.

Lebanon and Grenada, Aug. 24, 1982, to July 31, 1984; Persian Gulf, Aug. 2, 1990, to cessation of hostilities as determined by the U.S. government; U.S. Merchant Marines, Dec 7, 1941, to Aug. 15, 1945.

Women who meet the following conditions are eligible to join: mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, granddaughters and great-granddaughters of all men and women who were in the U.S. Armed Forces on the following dates: April 6, 1917, to Nov. 11, 1918; Dec. 7, 1941, to Dec. 31, 1946; June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955; Dec. 22 1961, to May 7, 1975.

Also those who, as citizens, served on active duty in the armed forces of any of the governments associated with the United States during those periods and died in the line of duty or after honorable discharge, or women who are in their own right eligible to join.

If an applicant is joining on her own service record, the auxiliary will be responsible for verification. It is not necessary to be a member of the American Legion.

Veterans who want to join should bring separation papers from the service.

Eligibility for Sons of the American Legion is as follows: All male members’ descendants, adopted sons or step-sons; male descendants of veterans who died in the service during World Wars I and II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War and all the above dates; or who died subsequent to their honorable discharge.

In addition to the above, Iraq and Afghanistan veterans will be eligible to join. The post will process any veterans who may want to transfer from the post-at-large 178, Waterville.

Post 22 dues are $23, Auxiliary, $13, and Sons of the Legion, $10. Serving on this membership drive will be First Vice Commander Doris Hamel, Trustee Don Dube, Adjutant Jerry DerBoghosian and Music Chairman Bert Mathieu.
