PARIS – Caitlin Stauder, a senior at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, is SAD 17’s recipient of the 2006 Principal’s Award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association.

“I’m very surprised, and I’m very honored,” Stauder said Tuesday. Stauder, 18, lives in Paris with her dad, Tim, her mom, Juliann, and three younger siblings. She credited her award to the “great teachers we have here, and my coaches and conductors and my family.”

The award is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship. The award is presented each year to one senior in more than 140 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the Maine Principals’ Association.

Ted Moccia, principal of OHCHS, said the school’s administrative team along with the guidance counselor staff make the final decision about the recipient. He described Stauder as a leader and a positive influence on other students.

“Other students look up to her,” Moccia said. “She assumes the leadership role very easily and does it so well because she knows other students look up to her.”

Stauder, Moccia and other award winners and their principals will be honored at a luncheon in Bangor on April 8, where each student will receive a commemorative plaque. Five $1,000 scholarships also will be awarded that day.

Stauder is captain of the girls’ varsity soccer team and captain of the high school’s downhill ski team.

She is also an accomplished violinist and takes private lessons. She also is a member of the National Honor Society.

Stauder said she plans to attend a four-year liberal arts college and will probably major in biology. She has been accepted to Lawrence University in Wisconsin and Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania.

“I strive to lead, but I have a lot of support at home and here at school,” Stauder said. “They make it easy for me to be successful.”
