PARIS – A Rumford man has been indicted and charged with allegedly holding his wife and five children hostage for three days last month and threatening them with a shotgun at their home, Rumford police said Tuesday.
Last week, an Oxford County grand jury indicted Michel B. Violette, 57, charging him with felony terrorizing and criminal threatening, and three misdemeanor crimes: terrorizing, reckless conduct and criminal restraint.
According to the indictment, on Jan. 19, Violette allegedly restrained and threatened to kill his wife and their children with the weapon.
Violette, who has been in Oxford County Jail in Paris since his arrest on Jan. 20, was released Friday on $5,000 cash bail, investigating Detective Lt. George Cayer said late Tuesday afternoon.
“He made threats to his wife and family over a three-day period, and they were not allowed to use a phone or leave a small bedroom, where the terrorizing took place,” Cayer said.
Cayer declined further comment.
Violette is to be arraigned at a later date in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.
