MEXICO – The Mexico Police Department has four suspects in the theft of $14,000 in cash and checks from Mountain Valley Middle School, Chief Jim Theriault said Thursday.
The theft took place sometime between Nov. 8 and 16. He said the funds were taken from a locked file cabinet that was inside a vault in the school’s main office. Some of the money was raised to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims.
He said he plans to meet with SAD 43 Superintendent Jim Hodgkin and the school’s office staff on Monday. More than 25 people had access to the cabinet, he said.
He and patrolman Jeff Stoddard have been investigating the case, while the Rumford Police Department has been on backup.
“We’re getting close,” he said.
In another matter, two cars were hit by orange paint balls in the Sun Valley Circle neighborhood just before 11 p.m. Sunday.
Theriault said there was no damage, and the paint was washed off. This is the first paint ball incident in the area, he said.
A male juvenile is expected to be interviewed regarding the incident on today, he said.
