RUMFORD – Dr. Gary Baldwin, obstetrician/gynecologist with Swift River Health Care and Rumford Hospital, has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

The college comprises surgeons of all specialties as well as general surgeons. Baldwin was elected by demonstrating that he meets the college’s rigorous standards and through a personal interview.

“Being a Fellow affords me access to a great deal of information about new techniques through the journals and meetings of the college,” Baldwin said. It also assures that he is up to date in the practice of gynecological surgery.

In addition, Baldwin recertifies annually with the American Board of OB/GYN, instead of the 10-year recertification that is mandatory.

The American Board of OB/GYN recommends a body of significant literature in the field every year.

A graduate of Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, Baldwin served his residency at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi. He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Before joining the medical staff of Rumford Hospital in the summer of 2003, he had practiced obstetrics and gynecology for 23 years, the last 11 in a small, rural town in Wyoming.

Baldwin and his wife, Judi, who also works at Swift River Health Care, live in Rumford. They have four grown children.
