BUCKFIELD – All Buckfield Village Corp. customers were receiving water by 3 a.m. Thursday, nearly 24 hours after frost heaved a hydrant in front of the town garage on Route 117 and broke a water main.

Superintendent Lou Williams said the hydrant will be repaired in the spring, but, for now, a temporary fix has been made so customers have water.

“When the break occurred,” Williams said, “the water went quite a distance underground so it was hard to find the source.”

Some 300,000 gallons of water were lost from the town’s tank in about three hours.

Someone noticed a large amount of water at a culvert near the hydrant and notified officials, he said.

Williams said he took water samples from three different sites to the Paris Utility District laboratory in Paris for testing.

He expects to have results today and hopes to be able to lift the boil-water order for the corporation’s 185 customers.

The main ruptured about 5 p.m. Wednesday and left all customers without water.
