PARIS – The Oxford County Democrats have set a new high total for turnout at caucus meetings in a non-presidential year, with close to 200 attendees at 35 caucuses held on Feb. 26.

County Chairwoman Cathy Newell of Greenwood has received confirmation of 150 attendees to date and estimates that the remaining towns will account for approximately 50 more.

“This was certainly an improvement over 2002 and reflects the efforts to establish active Democratic organizations in all Oxford County municipalities,” Newell said.

Many towns, including Norway, Lovell, Waterford and Albany, made a special effort to contact Democrats ahead of the caucus and were rewarded with excellent attendance.

Delegates to the 2006 Democratic Convention were elected. The convention will be held on June 2 and 3 in Augusta with U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold as keynote speaker.

Candidates for county and legislative office spoke at many caucuses, and nominating petitions were circulated for Gov. John Baldacci, Congressman Mike Michaud, U.S. Senate candidates Jean Hay Bright and Eric Mehnert and local races.

Contributions for Keep ME Warm, the heating assistance fund established by Baldacci, were received at all caucuses.

The Oxford County Democratic Committee welcomes participation from all interested in electing Democrats in 2006 and beyond. Anyone interested may visit the Web at www.oxforddems.org or call Newell at 875-2116.
