Last week, the news out of spring training was Manny being Manny. This week, it’s Boomer being Boomer.
David Wells is back in mid-season form, on and off the mound.
That’s good news for the Red Sox.
Wells spent the first two weeks of camp staying as far away from his Red Sox teammates as possible. He was the first to arrive at the minor-league complex, and was often finishing up his work day as the rest of the team was coming out on the field.
Wells steadfastly refused to speak to the media during this stretch, first saying he would speak after Manny Ramirez spoke, then saying he’d speak when he was ready.
Last week, he was ready – to do an about-face. Wells not only spoke, he shocked Red Sox Nation by saying he wanted to stay put for the final year of his contract, and was ready to finish off his career in Boston.
Once he started talking, Wells couldn’t stop. By the end of the week, he had taken on Barry Bonds (telling him to come clean) and Commissioner Bud Selig.
Selig is an old target for Wells. Last year he called him an “idiot” and earned a one-on-one meeting with baseball and union officials. This week, he told The Hartford Courant that it was time for Selig to step down.
“There’s so much hatred against Bud right now,” said Wells. “It’s a joke. Nobody likes him.”
Later, Wells added that Selig “worries about what people say about him, and he Googles himself. I’m sure he’s going to Google tomorrow and say oh, there’s Dave talking about me.'”
This can only be a good sign for the Red Sox. If Wells is feeling ornery, he must be feeling like himself. And, if he’s feeling like himself, he might come close to winning another 15 games and dominating opposing hitters at Fenway.
And the Red Sox starting rotation – already deeper than its been in years – is suddenly even deeper.
Wells is always good theater, baffling hitters with his curveball and baffling us with his comments. We can now sit back and watch Wells’ performances for the rest of the summer.
Unless, of course, you’re Bud Selig, who clearly has some Googling to do.
