Ever since the Bush regime took over and brutalized the English language into something unrecognizable, I have a high tolerance for bull. So when I read a letter to the editor one day about Kalle Oakes (March 8), I was convinced I could ignore it.

Wouldn’t you think I could? After listening to George Bush say that his policies have made America safer, that no one could have predicted the collapse of the New Orleans’ levees, that wonderful things are happening in Iraq, shouldn’t I be desensitized to black is white, up is down, Kalle can’t write?

Can’t do it. I’ve bit my tongue to the point of bleeding out. Babe played baseball, Ali boxed, Kalle writes, and what he writes wins awards (first place for Hot Corner column, 1999, MPA; a first place award on Cindy Blodgett; a first place award on Holly Knight; the list is too long). His articles are clipped out of the paper all the time. Tell parents you’re saving the paper for them and they’ll tell you they already went out and bought a dozen.

I disagree with Kalle Oakes about the Winter Olympics, but pretending he’s anything short of one of the best in the business is enough fertilizer for every potato in Ireland.

We’re incredibly lucky to have him writing about our teams and our towns.

If there is something to complain about, it sure isn’t Kalle Oakes.
