Dear Sun Spots: I recently read an article about Hannaford opening its 50th supermarket in Bridgton. The story said the store will employ approximately 100 associates. Why does Hannaford, owned by the Delhaize Group of Brussels, Belgium, refer to its employees as associates?- No Name, Norway.

Answer: Sun Spots spoke with Hannaford spokeswoman Caren Epstein, who says Hannaford views an associate as a partner who is investing in the success of the business and has a shared responsibility with that success.

“To us, the notion of employee denotes working for rather than with,” she says.

Dear Sun Spots: In response to Faithful Reader whose 80-year-old friend has burning feet at night that keep her awake: I, too, have a problem. I was diagnosed with neuropathy, which is burning, painful and worst at night.

Neurotrin, or gabapentin, a prescription medicine used to treat the nerve pain that follows shingles in adults was prescribed by my internist. It works well. I get relief almost every night. I hope sharing this will help her. – No Name, No Town.
