NEWRY – A 55-year-old man who reportedly skied off a Jordan Bowl trail late Tuesday morning, was airlifted from Sunday River Ski Resort to a Lewiston hospital, resort spokesman Alex Kaufman said early Tuesday afternoon.

Due to company policy, Kaufman would not disclose the man’s condition or name.

He did say that the man was skiing on Lollapalooza trail when the accident happened at about 11:19 a.m., just above the path’s midway point.

“He seems to have just skied off the trail, and went into an area that’s not a clear trail,” Kaufman said.

A LifeFlight helicopter landed in a Jordan Bowl parking lot, picked up the patient, and left by 12:26 p.m., en route to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Kaufman said.

Lollapaloooza is rated as one of the resort’s easiest trails, he added.

Additionally, Kaufman said, patient comfort and frost heaves are why LifeFlight, instead of ambulances, have taken people injured lately in ski accidents to area hospitals.

“We’re doing more LifeFlights due to the bumpy roads,” he said.

Kaufman stressed that when medical helicopters are called for ski accidents this time of year, it doesn’t necessarily mean the injured all have life-threatening injuries.

For example, he said, LifeFlight picked up a skier with a broken leg on Saturday afternoon, so the patient wouldn’t have to endure a bumpy ride to the Lewiston hospital in an ambulance.
