NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) – A 7-month-old baby was treated at a local hospital after he ingested heroin or another opiate drug at his New Bedford home, according to a published report Friday.

The baby’s mother noticed he was “not acting right,” police Capt. Richard Spirlet told the Standard-Times of New Bedford. She brought the child to St. Luke’s Hospital on Wednesday night.

When traces of opiates were found in the baby’s bloodstream, he was brought to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Rhode Island.

Items in the home have been sent for drug testing, police said. The parents have been “very cooperative,” Spirlet said. The owner of the drugs likely is someone close to the child.

“There’s one thing for sure – a 7-month-old child comes in contact with very few people,” he said.

Charges are unlikely, however. The child likely touched the drug and put his hand in his mouth.

“At this time, we don’t feel that it was intentional,” he said.

No names were released.

The Department of Social Services also is investigating the case. The mother “hasn’t left the baby” since Wednesday night, agency spokeswoman Denise Monteiro said.

“The mom seems very appropriate,” she said.

Police said they won’t know exactly what drug it was or how much was in the baby’s body until a detailed blood test are completed.
