LEWISTON – A local group that helps the homeless is sponsoring a Light the Streets campaign on Friday, March 31.
The Lewiston/Auburn Alliance for Services to the Homeless is asking people to leave a light on all night in a window facing a street in support of a national coalition that fights homelessness and poverty.
To the Streets is a coalition of people who are no longer willing to accept homelessness and poverty in the nation. An estimated 35.9 million Americans live in poverty, 36 million are at risk of experiencing hunger, 3.5 million experience homelessness, and 1.3 million of the homeless are children.
The Lewiston/Auburn Alliance for Services to the Homeless is holding its Light the Streets campaign in conjunction with To the Streets’ National Sleep Out, designed to raise awareness, personal commitments and political change.
The alliance, known as LASH, meets monthly to coordinate and share information about housing and services to homeless individuals and families throughout Androscoggin County.
For more information about LASH, contact Craig Phillips at 795-6044 or visit www.tothestreets.org to learn more about the To the Streets Coalition.
