RUMFORD – The reported theft of a 60-cent newspaper led to the arrest and jailing of a Rumford man on a felony charge, police said.

Michael P. Moore, 22, was charged with theft and receiving stolen property Monday after he allegedly took a neighbor’s Sun Journal newspaper after it was delivered at 4:20 a.m. by a carrier, Detective Lt. George Cayer said Friday.

The investigating officer responding to the carrier’s complaint reportedly found Moore reading the stolen paper while sitting at his kitchen table.

Cayer said Moore was charged with a Class C felony due to his prior theft convictions. Moore failed to post bail of $500 cash, and was taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris.

Because the case involves a felony charge, Moore is to be arraigned on June 22 in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris instead of district court. His case is expected to be presented to the Oxford County grand jury in Paris next week.
