RUMFORD – River Valley Merchants took top honors in the A Division of the Mountain Valley Rec Basketball Tournament last weekend. Reunited of Portland prevailed in the B Division.

The Merchants, comprised mostly of this year’s Mountain Valley Rec League champion Morgan Concrete, was coached by Ryan Casey and Scott New. The champs beat Team Riggs of Winthrop in the finals. Winthrop was coached by Steve Beal.

Reuited defeated North Country of Strong/Phillips to claim the championship in the B Division. North Country was coached by Rand Richards.

All-Star selections for the B Division were: Daryl Whitney, Stone Mountain Mortgage; Dick Beane and Corey Guillford, North Country; Zach Reed, CSM Real Estate of Farmington-Kingfield; and Kevin Heffernan, Reunited. MVP honors went to Reunited’s Dan Finney.

A Division all-stars: Derek Holt, Chris Williamson, Ranor, Inc., of Jay; Matt Clement and Kinsey Durgin, Merchants. Kevin Payette of the Merchants was named MVP.

In the foul-shooting contest, Derek Holt of Skowhegan’s Above Average Joe’s defeated River Valley’s Kevin Gallant in the finals.

Durgin won the 3-point contest, besting Heffernan.

It was an exciting slam-dunk contest featuring Adam Blodget and Clement of Team Riggs, Taylor Caron of Above Average Joe’s, and Durgin and Eric Canwell of the Merchants, Canwell, Durgin and Clement advanced to the finals. Clement put an exclamation point on the contest by jumping over Eddie Paterson, tourney organizer, and slamming in his final dunk to claim the title.

Proceeds from the tourney went to the American Lung Association of Maine.
