BETHEL – The Bethel Historical Society’s winter/spring course book, “A Distant War Comes Home: Maine in the Civil War Era,” is in stock, and the more than 40 participants who wish to acquire a copy at the special course price of $10 can do so.

Those wanting to pick up the book should go to the society office in the Robinson House, 10 Broad St., during regular hours from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

The tour of Bethel Civil War veteran gravesites that will follow the course on Saturday, April 29, will begin at 10 a.m. Several Bethel cemeteries will be visited during the tour. The rain date is 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30.

During the class on March 30, which dealt with battlefield life and the Maine home front, several members of the Sons of Union Veterans visited and encouraged anyone with a Civil War ancestor to consider joining the Sons or the Daughters. The nearest Sons of Union Veterans is in South Paris: Joshua Chamberlain Camp 69.

More information about the society and its activities may be obtained by calling 824-2908 or 800-824-2910, e-mailing info@bethelhistorical.org or visiting www.bethelhistorical.org.
