LISBON FALLS – The music departments at P.W. Sugg Middle School and Lisbon High School have announced that three of their students have been selected to participate in the John Phillip Sousa National Junior Honors Band – New England Region on April 20, 21 and 22, at the Bromfield School in Harvard, Mass.

The students are Sierra Guay, a ninth-grade trombone player at Lisbon High School; Kenneth Stack, an eighth-grade trumpet player from Sugg; and Shauna Riordan, a seventh-grade tenor saxophone player, also from Sugg.

The festival is open to the most outstanding woodwind, brass and percussion players in grades seven, eight and nine from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

More than 1,200 schools in the six-state region were mailed invitations to recommend students for the special event, and approximately 200 students were selected. It is the third time the festival has been organized.

The festival concert will include a resident guest composer, Dr. Joseph T. Spaniola, chief composer/arranger for the Air Force Academy Band of Colorado Springs, who has composed two new works for the band that will be premiered by the students.

The John Phillip Sousa Foundation offers programs to support the cause of wind band music around the country as a way to bring honor to Sousa.
