NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) – Scott Whitrock hit his first Double-A home run and three relievers pitched seven shutout innings Wednesday as the New Britain Rock Cats edged the Portland Sea Dogs 2-1 Wednesday in the Eastern League.

Whitrock broke up a 1-1 tie with one out in the seventh inning when he lifted a long fly over the wall in right-center field off Portland reliever Jonathan Searles (0-1).

With New Britain (2-4) trailing 1-0, Levale Speigner entered the game in relief of starter Glen Perkins and threw four shutout innings.

Jay Sawatski (1-0) retired all five batters he faced.

Bobby Korecky came on with two down in the eighth and set down four hitters to notch his second save. New Britain relievers retired the last 15 hitters after the Sea Dogs (3-3) got eight hits and stranded 10 runners in the first five frames.

David Murphy had three singles and Jeremy West two to lead Portland, which had a three-game win streak snapped.

Whitrock and Denard Span had two hits apiece for New Britain.
