ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – Jonny Gomes hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the eighth inning, leading the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a 7-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.

Tomas Perez opened the eighth with a single off Sendy Rleal (0-1) and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joey Gathright. Damon Hollins’ single put runners on first and third before Russell Branyan reached to load the bases when Rleal was charged with an error for misplaying his bunt.

Gomes then sent a 1-1 pitch into the left field stands for his first career grand slam and a 7-3 lead.

Ty Wigginton homered for the second straight game, hitting a two-run shot off Orioles reliever John Halama to tie the score 3-all in the seventh.

Kevin Millar homered twice and drove in three runs to lead the Orioles. He put Baltimore ahead 2-0 with a two-run shot in the second and added a solo homer in the ninth.

Shawn Camp (1-0) pitched 1 1-3 innings to pick up the win. After giving up Millar’s second homer, he walked Jeff Conine and was replaced by Dan Miceli. The veteran right-hander walked Nick Markakis before getting Brian Roberts on a fly ball to left field and Luis Matos on a fielder’s choice to pick up his third save.

Jay Gibbons extended the Orioles lead to 3-1 with a run-scoring single in the sixth, giving him eight RBIs in five games against Tampa Bay this season.

Baltimore starter Daniel Cabrera gave up only one run and three hits in five innings. He also had three wild pitches and walked a career-high nine. The right-hander struck out 10, one short of his career best.

Cabrera struck out four of his first five batters before struggling with his control for the second consecutive start. He walked four of five during one stretch, and also had a wild pitch that allowed Gathright to score from third to make it 2-1 in the third.

Cabrera lasted 1 1-3 innings in his first start last Friday, giving up seven runs, three hits and seven walks in a 14-8 loss to Boston.

Tampa Bay loaded the bases – on a single and two walks – with two outs in the fourth and fifth, but failed to score both times. Branyan struck out to end the fourth, while Perez flew out one inning later.

Devil Rays left fielder Carl Crawford was ejected in the sixth after he grounded out. He threw his helmet onto the turf while returning to the dugout.

Tampa Bay’s Casey Fossum allowed three runs and four hits over seven innings. He struck out three and walked four.
