AUGUSTA (AP) – A woman who chained herself to a railing in Maine’s House of Representatives gallery Tuesday evening was charged with obstructing government operations.

Hillary Lister, 25, of Athens, chained herself to a banister in the gallery while the House was in session. The incident interrupted House business for about a half hour, said spokesman Stephen McCausland of the state Public Safety Department.

Lister eventually unlocked a padlock on the chains to free herself, was arrested and released on bail, McCausland said.

Lister and others are opposed to a plan by a Massachusetts company to build a plant in Athens that would burn demolition debris, much of it from out of state.
