BANGOR (AP) – A Penobscot County Jail inmate died Tuesday of injuries sustained in an apparent suicide attempt over the weekend, jail officials said.
Charles Mushero, 47, of Medway, was found hanging from his cell door with a bed sheet tied around his neck on Saturday afternoon, jail officials said.
He remained in critical condition at Eastern Maine Medical Center until Tuesday, when he died.
Mushero’s death was the third inmate suicide at the Penobscot County Jail in the past 31/2 years, according to Sheriff Glenn Ross. An inmate at the Piscataquis County Jail died earlier this month after hanging himself with a bed sheet.
Mushero was brought to jail last Wednesday after being indicted on charges of burglary, theft, stealing drugs and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the sheriff.
He was placed in a maximum-security cell and was found by jail officers during their regular 15-minute checks.
