King to speak

TOPSHAM – Former Gov. Angus King will be the keynote speaker for the 28th annual American Cancer Society Living With Cancer Conference on Wednesday, May 3, at the Augusta Civic Center.

Cancer patients, family members, friends and medical professionals are invited. This year’s theme, “One DayYour Issues,” will focus on personal, medical and advocacy topics.

King, an attorney with Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer and Nelson, was appointed in 2005 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to a national commission charged with studying how to reduce the costs of Medicaid.

King will share his personal experience with cancer, his involvement with Medicaid and his thoughts on advocacy.

Scholarship

AUBURN – The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs of Maine have announced the W. Scott Reid Scholarship Fund, a minimum of $1,000 available to residents attending a college in the state and enrolled in a major field of study leading to a degree in nursing in a college in the state.

The scholarship is a gift and does not have to be repaid unless the student does not complete the year for which the scholarship was awarded.

Star gazing

CUMBERLAND – The Southern Maine Astronomers will offer an array of short presentations on astronomical events and topics, designed for people of all interest and experience levels in astronomy, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 28, at the Cumberland Congregational Church. It is free.

The group also invites people with questions about how to operate their own telescopes to bring them to the meeting for hands-on assistance after the meeting.

Training cruise

CASTINE – Maine Maritime Academy students, officers and crew will visit Barcelona, Spain, May 16 to 19, Gdynia, Poland, May 29 to June 1, and Cobh, Ireland, June 7 to 10, as part of the college’s annual two-month training cruise to foreign and domestic ports-of-call.

The ship will make its final port call in Portland June 21 to 24. Under the command of Captain Larry Wade of Bradley, the training ship, State of Maine, will depart from Castine harbor at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 3.

The training will commence in port on Friday, April 28, for a week of preparation. The ship will return to its homeport on Saturday, June 24.

“Follow the Voyage,” MMA’s online ship tracking and interactive Web site, will be coordinated by students and staff as part of training activities.
