BETHEL – David R. Jones, a graduate student at the University of Southern Maine’s American and New England Studies program, will join the Bethel Historical Society as a summer intern in 2006, according to Stanley R. Howe, Ph.D., executive director of the society.

“We are delighted to have someone of Professor Jones’ caliber join us,” said Howe. “It is one more step in our evolution as a leader in New England local and regional history,” he added.

Jones, who holds a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from the State University of New York at Buffalo, also received a Ph.D. in British history from Yale University. He is studying New England history at the University of Southern Maine and is opting for an intern experience in public history (history as practiced by museums and historical societies as opposed to that featured in colleges and universities) by working from mid-June through mid-August at the society’s regional history center, where he will be involved in a myriad of activities, including guided tours, special events, historical editing, collection management and exhibits.

For more than 20 years, Jones has taught courses in higher education and British history at a number of Australian universities. He has received a number of fellowships and served on several editorial boards.

He is the author and/or editor with others of several books and articles and has contributed to other works in the fields of history and higher education.
