ALBANY, N.H. (AP) – A collision between a van and a moose on the Kancamagus Highway this week has officials warning motorists to be especially careful this spring because the winter was mild.

“There’s more deer and more moose. This is traditionally a time of year when we have more collisions than usual,” Fish and Game officer Brian Adams said.

A Concord woman hit a moose just after 9 a.m. Monday on the Kancamagus Highway in Albany. Scott Carr, the Carroll County sheriff, said the moose did not appear to be injured and wandered into the woods.

He urged drivers to pay attention to moose-crossing signs posted at known danger spots.

Nearly 200 moose are killed every year on New Hampshire highways, Fish and Game estimates.

“There’s liable to be more collisions with them,” Abrams said. “They’re moving into their habitat. Once things start greening up, we ask people to be extra cautious.”
