LEWISTON – The Lewiston Maineiacs are changing spots on the radio dial, and Lewiston/Auburn’s newest sports radio station now has an anchor for its local coverage.

In a deal announced Thursday, 1470 ESPN, owned by Nassau Broadcasting, has picked up the rights to broadcast all of the Lewiston Maineiacs’ regular-season and playoff games beginning in September.

“The opportunity to have all 70 games plus the playoffs broadcast live on 1470 ESPN was a natural transition for the Lewiston Maineiacs,” said team vice president and governor Matt McKnight. “We are equally pleased to have Jeff Mannix return as the man behind the mic as he continues to garner praise around the league for his ability to deliver a first-class product.”

Mannix won an award as the most valuable member of the organization at the end of the recent season, and will anchor radio coverage of every game next season.

“This is a perfect match for both 1470 ESPN and the Lewiston Maineiacs,” said Stan Manning, the director of programming at the fledgling station. “The No. 1 name in sports and the most popular sports team of the greater Lewiston/Auburn area coming together.”

McKnight said that in addition to the ESPN name, the team will also benefit from several cross-promotional opportunities with other Nassau stations in the market, including 99.9 The Wolf, 107.5 Frank-FM and 106.7 The Bone.

The deal also ends a two-year affiliation with Gleason Media Services, which has been the flagship station for the team the last two seasons, carrying the road games on its AM stations in Lewiston/Auburn, Rumford and Norway.

The Maineiacs also announced Thursday that the team’s 2006-07 campaign will begin with a two-week road trip at the end of September, with the 2006 home opener tentatively scheduled for Friday, Oct. 6 at the Colisee.
