WATERVILLE – Kristin Masino pitched two complete games to lead Bates to 2-1 and 6-3 wins over Colby in softball action Thursday.

Masino allowed just three hits while striking out five and walking one in the opener. Colby (6-16) pitcher Lauren Olmstead was strong as well, with just one earned run and five strikeouts.

Colby had leads in both games, including 1-0 through five innings in the first game. The Mules scored one run in the fourth when Kara Fagan led off with a double and later scored on an RBI single by Tory Starr.

Bates got both of its runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Kyla Decato and Alex Bethel. The hits brought in Lissa Moses after she led off with a double and Katie Franklin, who had walked. The Mules had leads of 2-0 and 3-2 in the second game, but Masino was able to keep the Bobcats (12-8) in the game with a six-hitter and two strikeouts.

Decato went 3-for-4 and scored twice to lead Bates, while Caitlin Murphy and Leah Citrin added two hits apiece. Carlie Minichino belted a two-run home run in the first inning for Colby and Mollie Puskar had an RBI double to score Olmstead, who also had doubled.

Husson takes two

BANGOR – The Husson College softball team came away with a pair of wins against the University of Maine at Presque Isle Thursday, sweeping the doubleheader in convincing fashion with 10-2 and 9-3 victories.

In Game 1, Jordan Pruett and Sabrina Sevigny led Husson with three RBIs each, while Carolyn McAvoy belted a pair of hits. Alicia LaGrange allowed just four hits in six innings of work to notch the win. Nicole Michaud led UMPI’s offensive effort with two hits. Michaud also handled pitching duties and was credited with the loss.

In the nightcap, Nicole Manzo and Sabrina Sevigny tallied two hits and two RBIs each to propel Husson to another win. Erika Veinot allowed just seven hits and three runs in a complete game effort to notch the victory.

Men’s lacrosse

UNE 5, USM 3

GORHAM – Ryan Rivard scored three goals to lead the University of New England to a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the University of Southern Maine in men’s lacrosse action Thursday.

Rivard’s first goal came with 28 seconds to play in the first quarter.

He scored twice in the third quarter, with the second tally giving the Nor’easters (5-8) their first lead of the game. Bill Vasey and Dan Leyden had the other UNE goals. Kenny Gates and Juan Lozano each had two assists.

The Huskies (2-8) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 14 minutes on goals from Mark Bubier, Shane Billings and Greene native Dylan Nadeau.

After a scoreless second quarter, the Huskies led 3-1 at halftime. UNE scored three goals in the third quarter to grab a 4-3 lead, and had the only goal of the fourth quarter.

A.J Gagliardi was credited with nine saves in the UNE goal.

Jeff Lamoreaux made 14 saves for the Huskies.

Baseball

St. Joe’s sweeps

STANDISH – The St. Joseph’s baseball team rolled to a 13-2 and 2-0 wins over Thomas College in a doubleheader on Thursday..

Keil Martin led the Monks (22-6) in Game 1, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Luke Enman chipped in with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Ben Muniz and Andrew Wood combined for four RBIs.

Steven Stout allowed just five hits and two runs in five innings of work to record the win.

In the nightcap, Enman and Mark Clapp both crossed the plate for St. Joe’s to help eek out a 2-0 win.

The Monks only managed four hits overall in a lackluster contest.

Miles Johnson pitched seven innings of two-hit baseball to notch the win.
