STORRS, Conn. (AP) – Spring Weekend has ended at the University of Connecticut with 13 more arrests as cold and rainy weather prompted crowds of students to quit relatively early.

Students were arrested Saturday night and early Sunday morning on a range of charges such as possession of alcohol by a minor, marijuana possession, breach of peace and carrying a dangerous weapon, campus police said.

State and UConn police had made dozens of arrests at the school on Friday and Saturday, but the crowds were for the most part peaceful, officials said. Those also were mostly alcohol violations although one person was charged with assaulting a police officer, said Major Ron Blicher.

UConn spokeswoman Karen Grava said Sunday that cold and rainy weather prompted students to quit the weekend party before 1 a.m. Sunday.

Spring Weekend, the traditional last bash before finals, has a tradition for rowdiness and, occasionally, violence.

In 1998, police in riot gear made more than 100 arrests when the celebration turned violent and resulted in nearly $150,000 in property damage. Four years ago about 100 people were arrested, but since then the numbers have declined.

State police noted, however, that the potential for problems kept them out in force. On Friday night, police estimated there were between 10,000 and 12,000 people partying one campus apartment campus apartment complex. Troopers joined forces with campus police at that site.

Drunken driving checkpoints were set up around campus and UConn has tried to head off the problems by sponsoring a number of on-campus activities.

Saturday night, usually the busiest of the weekend, featured a concert at Gampel Pavilion. Students were allowed to take one guest and more than 4,000 tickets had been sold by early evening, Grava said.
