NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine (AP) – Maine state police charged a 14-year-old from Norridgewock with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of another teen, investigators said Wednesday.
The shooting on March 19 was initially described as a hunting mishap, but the teenagers later admitted they were playing with guns.
Joshua Sawyer, 15, of Pittsfield, was shot and killed while he and two friends were out shooting in a field in Norridgewock, investigators said.
The 14-year-old boy who fired the shot that hit Sawyer in the neck was not being identified by state police on Wednesday. All three boys, including a 13-year-old, were armed at the time of the shooting, investigators said.
Also facing charges is a man who supplied the guns. Scott Rioux, 34, of Norridgewock, was summonsed on three counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of hunting on Sunday, investigators said.
The teenager is due in Skowhegan District Court on June 12. Rioux’s court appearance will be two days later, police said.
