STANDISH – After 12 innings of hard-fought baseball, the University of Southern Maine finally tallied a run to lift themselves to a 4-3 victory over St. Joseph’s in baseball Thursday evening.

Nick Vardaro smacked a homer, while Chris Burleson and Ryan Bourque each added a double for Southern Maine (20-11).

Relief pitcher Pat Foley came in during the 11th inning to capture the win.

The Monks’ (28-7-1) effort was led by Mark Clapp with a home run and with doubles by Wade Oliver and Brian Schools.

Colby 6, UMF 4

WATERVILLE – Tyler Hales had two hits and three runs scored to lead the Colby baseball team to a 6-4 win over the University of Maine at Farmington Thursday.

Colin Riggs had a clutch two-run single with two outs in the sixth to bring in Roddy Ames and Hales for the Mules (9-17). Sam Kennedy-Smith worked the first six innings to pick up his second win of the season.

The UMF (8-17) effort was led by Corey Provencher with an RBI triple in the fifth, and Ryan DiPompo with an RBI single in the seventh.

Softball

USM splits

GORHAM – Katie Martell went 3-3 with a double and two singles, while Freshman Bree Loon picked up her ninth win of the season to lead the University of Maine to a 7-3 win over Bridgewater State in the nightcap of a doubleheader Thrsday.

The Huskies dropped the opening game 2-1 to earn the split. In the first game, both teams were tied 1-1 through five innings. Nicole Hebert launched a homer in the sixth to lift Bridgewater (20-18) to the final 2-1 score. USM’s Katie Mainville fanned 10 batters in the loss, giving up only two runs on six hits.

Loon struck out seven batters and did not yield a walk for the Huskies (17-15) win in Game 2. Mainville, Danica Martin, and Sabrina Mills each knocked in runs for the Huskies win.
