NEWRY – The 4-H Youth Development Program in Oxford County will host a Teen Conference at Sunday River in early May. The event will bring teens from across Maine together for 2 days to identify statewide issues and needs of youth and encourage teens to get involved in service learning.

Four-H has more than a 100-year history in community service and many years in service learning through youth and adult partnerships. The impacts of service learning on youth include an increased commitment to the local community, increased self-esteem, improved academic performance and a greater understanding of real life application of learning.

The training is designed to get youth working with adults to build a plan to help the 4-H program reach more youth and challenge new program opportunities. The leadership initiative is sponsored by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, and a grant from the National 4-H Council Rural Development initiative.

For more information about the teen training and how to support the new 4-H Youth Development Campaign, contact Susan Jennings, extension educator, Oxford County Extension Office, 9 Olson Road, South Paris, ME 04281.
