PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Ryan Shannon scored two goals and assisted on a third as the Portland Pirates captured their Atlantic Division semifinal series by defeating the Providence Bruins, 5-2.

Portland scored four unanswered goals after Providence tied the game, 1-1, on Eric Nickulas’ power-play goal at 9:53 of the first period.

Shannon, a member of the AHL All-Rookie Team, scored the game’s key goal while Portland was skating short-handed in the second period.

Goalie Nathan Marsters (20 saves) blocked a shot by Ryan Gaucher and the rebound caromed to teammate Kent Huskins. Huskins scaled the puck off the right boards and it bounced to Shannon.

, who skated in alone on Derek Gustafson (24 saves). Shannon snapped home a shot at 15:12 that gave Portland a 4-1 lead.

Shannon increased the Pirates’ lead to 5-1 by scoring a power-play goal at 16:35 of the third period.
