LEWISTON – St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center will participate in Cover the Uninsured Week 2006, May 1 to 7, by helping clients at the Sisters of Charity Food Pantry sign up for MaineCare.

The hospital also will hang a banner in the emergency entrance lobby, along with a petition for visitors and staff to sign asking the congressional delegation to work on solving the problem.

Activities will take place all across the nation this week and will include press conferences, health and enrollment fairs, seminars for small businesses, hospital activities, business leader summits, interfaith outreach, and more.

Nearly 46 million Americans, including more than 8 million children, are living without health insurance.

Uninsured Americans live sicker and die younger than those with health insurance. Just one serious illness or injury can wipe out an uninsured family’s bank account.
