Students tell school board of Quebec, NYC trips

RUMFORD – Nearly 30 students from Catherine Charles’ French classes at Mountain Valley High School, along with seven adults, traveled to Lac Megantic and Quebec City early last month to learn the culture and practice their French.

They also met with students at Lac Megantic High School who have been pen pals for several months.

The SAD 43 board learned at Monday’s board meeting of the French class trip, as well as a New York City trip 45 members of the high school’s Civil Rights team and others took last month.

Charles said the Lac Megantic students reciprocated the visit a week after the MVHS students traveled to Quebec by visiting them for the day at the school.

In other matters at Monday’s board meeting, directors approved probationary contracts for 15 teachers and first year continuing contracts for 13 others.

They also granted permission to Superintendent James Hodgkin to issue teacher contracts during the summer months, and appointed social studies teacher Jarrod Dumas as boys varsity soccer coach at the high school.

The resignations of Robert Hamm, a district social worker whose position has been cut to half-time for the upcoming school year, and high school special education teacher Lauren McMullin were accepted.

Also on Monday, board member David McKivergan said he plans to resign his seat on the Region 9 School of Applied Technology cooperative board in June, two years before the term’s end. The district is looking for a replacement to fill out the term.
