LEWISTON – The Darfur Action and Awareness Coalition at Bates College, which helped organize Sunday’s rally against the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan, is seeking members to help raise money and awareness, and pressure the U.S. government to take stronger steps to stop the genocide.

The Bates group hopes to create a larger coalition in Lewiston-Auburn to join a national movement trying to address what has been described as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today.

Also helping to organize local opposition to the genocide is Rabbi Hillel Katzir of Temple Shalom Synagogue-Center in Auburn; and Dr. Stephen Sokol, a Lewiston doctor who has spent the last year practicing in Darfur.

Aliza Luft, one of the founders of the Bates Darfur group, can be reached by calling the college.
