National Guard prayer breakfast

AUGUSTA – The Maine National Guard will host the annual prayer breakfast at 7 a.m. Thursday, May 4, at the Augusta Armory, 179 Western Ave. It is open to the public. The meal, a catered buffet, costs $6.50.

Special music will be provided by the Skowhegan Area High School Band and the 195th Maine Army National Guard Band.

Speaker will be the Rev. Andrea Thompson McCall, assistant dean of students and interfaith chaplain at the University of Southern Maine.

Fishing families plan fundraiser

HARPSWELL – Fishing Families for Harpswell is sponsoring its third annual Fishermen’s Open House from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at the Merriconeag Grange. The fundraiser will help Fishing Families for Harpswell initiatives and the Campaign to Keep Holbrook’s Working.

The Holbrook Community Foundation is raising $1.5 million to purchase the historic Holbrook’s Wharf in Cundy’s Harbor and protect it from private development, ensuring that the wharf remains available for future commercial fishing use.

The event will feature lobsterboat tours, a touch tank with sea creatures and the hypothermia tank. There will be fish chowder, snacks and beverages. Members from the Campaign to Keep Holbrook’s Working will be on hand to answer questions and to give a slide show presentation.

Fishing Families for Harpswell will raffle eight lobsters, four pounds of fresh scallops, a day at sea aboard a working lobsterboat and two dinners for four at this summer’s Shore Dinner sponsored by Fishing Families for Harpswell.

2006 Corvette being raffled

TOPSHAM – The American Cancer Society will raffle a new 2006 Corvette Coupe as first prize, $1,000 cash as second prize and $500 cash as third prize on Aug. 26 at Strong Chevrolet in Damariscotta. A total of 1,500 tickets will be sold for $100 each.

Spring Running celebrates fish

AUGUSTA – The Spring Running, a festival to celebrate the Kennebec River’s herring revival, will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at Mill Park and Old Fort Western.

The event will highlight the Kennebec River as a valuable resource and will celebrate the return of fish such as shad, alewives and blueback herring. It will also serve as an opening to the new season of fishing and farming.

The program will include educational displays, interpretive programs, demonstrations, a farmer’s market and a river festival arts and crafts show.
