WELD – Firefighters, police and rescue crews were at the scene of a house fire Tuesday night on Bypass Road off Route 142.

One witness on Church Street reported seeing flames coming from the second floor of the house at about 8:40 p.m. Minutes later, phone service to a large portion of the town went down.

Few details about the blaze could be determined later Tuesday night. A fire dispatcher in Dixfield said the fire was under control at about 10:15 p.m. He said it appeared it was a wood structured home that burned and there were no reports of injuries.

Telephone calls placed to Weld fire Chief Wallis Tyler and other residents in Weld resulted in busy signals. At about 9:45 p.m., those signals were replaced by a recorded message reporting a problem with telephone company equipment.
