NORTH DARTMOUTH – Peter Bergeron and Brett Rogers provided the University of Southern Maine Huskies with two strong starting pitching performances en route to a 11-6 and 7-2 victories in a baseball doubleheader against the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth on Saturday.

Bergeron hurled seven shutout innings in the opening game, giving up six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.

Rogers nearly duplicated that effort in the nightcap with one earned run on four hits and five walks with six strikeouts. Freshman Chris Burleson had four hits in the first game and two more in the second, while Max Arsenault, Stefan Black and Josh Stowell had four hits apiece for the Huskies (27-13).

Dylan Zygmont had five hits in the doubleheader for UMass-Dartmouth (9-25).

Bowdoin sweeps

BRUNSWICK – Senior co-captain Trevor Powers became Bowdoin’s all-time leader in wins with a 10-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against Middlebury on Saturday. The Polar Bears took the nightcap as well, 5-1.

Powers allowed only four hits and an earned run in seven innings of work for the 20th win of his career, surpassing Scott Jamieson’s record of 19 wins in 2002.

All 10 of the Polar Bears runs came with two outs. Nick Lefeber had a pair of hits and two RBIs in the win.

Ricky Leclerc hit a two-run homer in the second game to help his cause on the mound, as he pitched seven innings of five-hit ball. Leclerc had two hits and two RBIs, giving him three of each in the doubleheader.

Robert Palladino and Tyler Bak were the losing pitchers for the Wildcats (21-8).

Bowdoin’s 27-6-1 mark in 2006 is the best in the program’s history, earning a 23rd ranking in the latest national poll. The Polar Bears will host the NESCAC Championship next weekend, taking on Williams on Friday afternoon.

St. Joe’s 11, Husson 9

STANDISH – Dustin Spiller and Mark Clapp hit home runs as St. Joseph’s edged Husson 11-9 in 10 innings in the NAC Conference Championship tournament Saturday.

Spiller swatted a pitch from Samuel Adol over the right-field fence to lead of the ninth inning and break an 8-8 tie, but the Eagles responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Chris McInnis that scored Jason Harvey to send the game into extra innings. That set up Clapp’s two-run shot in the 10th that won the game.

Sam Tupper picked up the pitching win in relief for the Monks (32-8-1), and Miles Johnson earned a save. Jon Tefft was tagged with the loss for Husson (26-15). St. Joseph’s will play the winner of the Husson-Castleton State game today in the double-elimination tournament.

Albany, Maine split

ORONO – Albany cranked out 15 hits and scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth as it defeated the University of Maine 7-6 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Sean Donovan had three hits and RBI and a run scored, while Nate Olson has two hits, including a double and a pair of RBIs for Albany. Al Barbato hit a solo home run for Albany. Maine’s Joe Hough went 4-for-5 with three runs and Matt McGraw went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a home run in the loss.

Mike Powers pitched all seven innings of the second game, giving up three runs on eight hits, to help Maine in a 10-3 victory over Albany.

Hough went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, three runs scored and a home run for the Black Bears (27-15).

Joel Barrett added two hits and two RBIs for Maine.

Softball

UMBC 4, Maine 3

ORONO – The University of Maryland-Baltimore Common softball team handed the University of Maine a 4-3 loss in the regular-season finale for both teams as the University of Maine softball team capped off its most successful season (35-17).

Maine went 16-5 in America East play, earning the right to host the conference tournament next weekend.

Senior pitcher Sarah Bennis gave up three earned runs on seven hits in four innings of work for the loss (19-6), and Erin Provost went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored for the Black Bears. Amy Kuhl had a pair of hits and an RBI.

Stevie Shore collected two hits and batted in a run for Retrievers (45-18). Lauren Nicholson pitched a complete game for the victory.

USM splits

PROVIDENCE – The University of Southern Maine softball team cranked out 14 hits and rode another solid pitching effort from senior Katie Mainville to earn a 4-3 win over the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.

With the win, the fifth-seeded Huskies, advance to play top-seed Rhode Island College in the championship round. Christen Lachapelle had three hits, while Sabrina Mills and Mainville each had two hits for the Huskies.

In the Little East Conference championship game, Nicole Riley scattered seven hits and allowed just one run with five strikeouts to earn her 24th victory of the season as Rhode Island College defeated Southern Maine 2-1. Casie Lyons, who finished with two hits and a double, scored a on triple by Christie Lotti in the second, that made it 2-0 Rhode Island.

Sabrina Mills had two hits and singled in Danica Martin in the third for the Huskies’ lone run.
