Dow seniors

AUBURN – Robin Dow Senior Citizens will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, at the Alden M. Gayton Post 31, 426 Washington St. The board of directors will meet at 10 a.m.

President Merry Strout presided at the April 25 meeting with 65 members present. April birthdays were observed. Trip Chairwoman Evelyn Sawin said a trip is planned for Foster’s Lobster House in York for June 30, price $49. For reservations, see Sawin at Robin Dow meetings or phone her at 998-4577.

Attendance prize winners were Doris Michael and Lucien Marcoux; pot of gold, Audrey Fleming, Midge Demers and Shirley Hawkins.

Union luncheon

AUBURN – The annual luncheon of the Woman’s Literary Union will be held at noon Thursday, May 11, at 19 Elm St. During the business meeting, WLU President Cathy Westleigh will hand over the gavel to Evelyn Larrabee, who will preside for the next two years.

Other new officers are: Mary Ann Norcross, vice president; Phyllis Mixer, corresponding secretary; Shirley Small, recording secretary; Marilyn Wilkinson, treasurer; and Amey-Louise Feeley, assistant treasurer.

The group does not meet during the summer and it will meet next on Sept. 14. New members are always welcome.

Dating after 50

LEWISTON – There are more than 21 million single men and women over the age of 50 in the U.S. today; in spite of this, most people feel awkward and scared when re-entering the dating scene.

The Successful Aging Series hosted by Club 50 and d’Youville Pavilion will present a free seminar, “Dating after 50 – The Perils and Pleasures,” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 11. The informal presentation is geared specifically to those people returning to the dating scene during mid-life.

Anne-Marie Mullins of St. Mary’s Employee Assistance Program will present an hour-long session in the resident dining room at d’Youville Pavilion. Register by calling 777-8808.

OES meeting

AUBURN – Pine Cone Chapter 26, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at the Masonic Hall, 1021 Turner St.

The chapter will honor grand representatives. Special honors will go to Roland Rod Martin to New York, Nancy Harris to Idaho, Violet Gerber to South Dakota and Patricia Hodgdon to Missouri.

The meeting will be preceded by an international potluck supper at 6:15 p.m. All Eastern Star members are welcome.

Council session

AUBURN – Twin City Council, United Commercial Travelers of America and Canada, will meet at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at the Odd Fellows Hall, Elm Street. Following the meeting, members will dine at a local restaurant. Members and guests are welcome.

Club field trip

LEWISTON – The Stanton Bird Club is planning a field trip for Sunday, May 14, to the New Gloucester Marsh/Gray Meadows. The group will car-pool from the J.C. Penney parking lot at the Auburn Mall. Interested individuals should meet there at 7 a.m. They will return around noon.

The highlight, according to trip leader Tom Hayward, will be the possible sighting of the secretive Virginia Rail, a small chicken-like bird that rarely ventures from the protection of the marsh reeds. They will also look for several species of herons, egrets and ducks that use the marsh for feeding and nesting, as well as the warblers and songbirds that will be returning from their winter homes in Central and South America

Participants should bring binoculars if they can. Club field trips are free and nonmembers are welcome. For more information, contact Hayward at 782-5238.

DAR program

BRUNSWICK – Regent Sheila Desgrosseilliers announces that Burnt Meadow Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at the home of Lois Crawford in Brunswick. Following the business meeting, a program on presidents will be presented.

Seniors dinner

AUBURN – New Auburn Senior Citizens will host a Chinese chop suey dinner with all the fixings on Wednesday, May 17, at the St. Louis Church Hall basement, Dunn Street. It is for members only at a cost of $3. Tickets must be purchased no later than Wednesday, May 10.

The regular meeting was held May 3 with President Virginia Levasseur presiding. A moment of silence was observed for three deceased members, Edna Michaud, Roger Roy and Ida Girardin. Birthdays for May were noted, small gifts were given and the “Happy Birthday Song” was sung. Gloria Landry was welcomed as a new member.

A trip to the Winnipesaukee train ride and turkey dinner is planned for Tuesday, July 18, and will cost $55. All members and friends are welcome. Pot of gold winners were Marion Tripp, Fern Cimon, Ginnette Beauchesne and Florence Bergeron.

A light lunch was served and bingo followed. Open bingo for seniors 60 and over will be held May 10, 24 and 31.

SAD 52 workshop

TURNER – SAD 52 Adult and Community Education will present a reptiles and amphibians workshop from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 3, for kindergarten through grade four at the Adult Learning Center in Turner Center.

Participants will learn the different kinds of reptiles and amphibians through slide shows, videos and hands-on experience. They will meet Cal, the California King snake, plus have a chance to hold frogs and lizards.
