Journalist visits

WEST PARIS – A journalist for the newspaper in Kuhmo, Finland, will be visiting in Maine the weekend of May 13. Antero Komulainen would like to visit with Finnish Americans, as he is working on a story of the immigrants from Finland to America.

An open house will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at the Finnish American Society Hall on Maple Street for anyone interested in meeting Antero.

Outreach supper

HEBRON – The Hebron Church Community Outreach will hold a public supper of meatloaf, beans, hot rolls and gingerbread with whipped cream from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Hebron Community Baptist Church. Proceeds will support local missions and church projects. Cost is adults $6 and children 10 and under, $3.

Benefit supper

MECHANIC FALLS – A benefit Country Sunday will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 14, at Silver Spur, Route 121, for Beverly Pepin, who has a serious illness.

There will be entertainment by Elizabeth Country Drifters, Norm DeCoteau, Elizabeth Decker, Duane and Darleen Waterman, Elaine Moore and Dee Dee and Elton Record.

Admission is $7. There will be a 50/50 drawing, Chinese auction, raffles and a sweet auction. Mother will receive a gift. For more information, call Barbara at 674-5667 or Lorri at 966-2771.

Community meal

WATERFORD – The last community supper of the season will be held at the Wilkins Community House on Plummer Hill in Waterford Flat at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 18. The public is invited to bring a dish to share and stay for the evening program.

A square dance demonstration will be presented by the Swinging Bears Club of South Paris and the new members, who are completing their class this month. John Thompson will call and will invite people to join in after the demonstration.

The Swinging Bears run an adult education course in square dancing at the middle school from September to May. Information will be available at the supper.

Chapter program

NORWAY – The local chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation will present “Feeding Our Children Before and After Birth” by Donna Dodge, registered dietitian, from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, at Fare Share Commons, Main Street. Admission is free and it is open to the public.

Donations sought

BETHEL – Donations of items in good salable condition (no clothing or computers) continue to be solicited for the Bethel Historical Society’s annual St. Never’s Day sale on Saturday, May 27.

All donations can be left on the back porch of the O’Neil Robinson House, 10 Broad St., and the side porch of Stan Howe’s home at 18 Broad St. For pick-up, call the society office at 824-2908.

All those wishing to join the St. Never’s Day sale by renting a table (72 X 30 inches) for $20 should call the society office. The society is sponsoring a tent on Stan Howe’s side lawn at the corner of Mason and Broad streets.

Plant sale

NORWAY – The Second Congregational Church, UCC, 205 Main St., will hold a hanging baskets plant sale from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13. Variety will consist of petunias, trailing impatiens, fuchsia, geranium, calibrachoa, verbena and special mixed baskets.

Club meeting

SOUTH PARIS – The Extra Mile ATV Club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at the town office. New members are welcome.

Buffet supper

WEST PARIS – A public buffet supper, featuring Finnish and American foods, will be held beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Finnish-American Heritage Center on Maple Street. The price is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12. It is being sponsored by the Finnish-American Heritage Society of Maine.

AARP trips

PARIS – The Oxford Hills AARP is participating in a trip on Dec. 8 to the Boston Wang Theater for a matinee performance of “The Radio City Christmas Spectacular.” The show stars the Rockettes, direct from New York.

The cost is $97/pp and includes the show tickets and the bus. Send a deposit of $61, the cost of a ticket.

The AARP will also see a matinee performance of “South Pacific” at the Maine State Music Theater in Brunswick on June 20. Tickets are $59/pp. Plans for the two-day trip to Bar Harbor on Sept. 13 and 14, $276/pp, are finalized and a deposit of $50 should be sent in soon.
