Author to speak

TOPSHAM – The Maine Council of Churches and Bangor Theological Seminary will present a conversation with Belden Lane from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at the Sky-Hy Conference Center.

The theme is “The Role of Storytelling in Justice and Healing.” A Maine state representative, an environmentalist and a physician will be among the conversation respondents.

It is open to the public, through advance registration with the Maine Council of Churches. Registration is $20. Call 772-1918 or go to the council Web site at www.mainecouncilofchurches.org to register.

Lane is best known for his books, “The Solace of Fierce Landscapes” and “Landscapes of the Sacred.” A Presbyterian, Lane is a professor of theology at St. Louis University.

Re-encampment

AUGUSTA – The Third Maine Regiment Volunteer Infantry will gather in Capitol Park at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4, to re-enact the campgrounds of the original Third Maine Infantry. The living history encampment will recreate some of the activities, emotions and personalities of that 1861 muster. The public is invited.

On Saturday, there will be firing exhibitions, living history demonstrations, an address given by “Col. Oliver Otis Howard” to the Third Maine, and a concert by Third Maine Fife and Drum.

On Sunday, “Chaplain Andrew Church” will perform an original church service and Third Maine will be sworn into federal service with a formal ceremony. There will be concerts and living history demonstrations.

Teachers’ tours

AUGUSTA – The ninth year of the Forest of Maine Teachers’ Tours still has openings for this summer. Featured on each of the tours will be a Project Learning Tree workshop, exposure to different types of forest management practices, tours of wood products facilities and hands-on experience with outdoor classrooms. The registration fee and cost to teachers is $100. CEUs and graduate credits are also available.

Space is still available on all three tours: Little Lyford Pond Camps near Moosehead Lake, July 11 to 14; Twin Pine Camps on Millinocket Lake near Katahdin, July 18 to 21; and Leen’s Lodge on West Grand Lake in Downeast Maine, Aug. 1 to 4.
