Yarmouth – Constance “Connie” Marie Thurlow, 82, died Monday, May 8.

She was born in Old Town, on Aug. 27, 1923, a daughter of Forrest L. Avery and Annie (DeRoche) Avery. She attended Old Town schools and was a graduate of Old Town High School, Class of 1941, and then attended St. Joseph’s College in Standish.

On Sept. 11, 1954, she married Robert L. Thurlow in Yarmouth, and they had three children. With her husband she helped continue the family business, Robert L Thurlow Plumbing and Heating of Yarmouth, as the company’s bookkeeper for more than 25 years.

Connie was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Yarmouth Fire Department. She loved to read, go fly-fishing with her husband, and making the home she and Robert built a home. In earlier days, she was known to have a huge garden that provided fresh produce for the foods she loved to cook for her family and can the rest. She was a hard working woman who loved her family. In later years, camping in Rangeley would become a great escape and in her last weeks she recalled, “I will always love Rangeley.”

She was strong of character with a clarity of opinion that was tempered with understanding and integrity.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth “Betsey” Barter of Yarmouth; her son, Robert “Bub” Thurlow of North Yarmouth; seven grandchildren, Ed, Dan, Jon, James, Jessica, Laura and Katie; two great-grandchildren, Camren and Adrianna; and her sister, Arlene Keithley of Warrenton, Va.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Patricia “Pat” Wood, on Jan. 3, 2005.

Connie’s family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Coastal Manor and Beacon Hospice for the loving care they gave to their mother.
