The most strenuous opponent of lotteries of any kind is Uncle Sam as represented by the post office department and the department of justice, the combined efforts of which make it difficult for any lottery schemes to live for the reason that they are debarred the use of the mails. The law is not a dead letter but a live think kept alive by the departments in Washington. Every known effort to get rid of all lottery schemes is employed.

The postal laws and regulations against the use of the mails in furthering or aiding lottery schemes of any kind reach out in all directions. Not only does it prevent lottery companies of this and other countries using the mails in sending their tickets to customers but they prohibit mailing, carrying or delivering of any circular matter pertaining thereto or any newspaper containing any advertisement or reference to any lottery scheme.

50 Years Ago, 1956

MACHIAS – The St. Regis Paper Co., has started its annual long log drive, the biggest in the east and the nation’s oldest. One million feet of logs started the 65-mile trip from Third Machias Lake to Whitneyville via the Machias River yesterday. Before the drive ends four million board feet will spill down the tortuous stream.

25 Years Ago, 1981

On Saturday, Ronald Reagan becomes the oldest president the United States has ever had.

No trumpets trumpeted, no gifts were gifted, no toasts were toasted on Friday, as Reagan turned 70 years and 98 days – equaling the record set by Dwight D. Eisenhower on the day he left office in 1961.

Reagan, born Feb. 6, 1911, already held one presidential age mark. He was the oldest man ever to be sworn in as president. The previous titlist, William Henry Harrison, 68 years and 23 days old on the day of his inauguration, was overcome by it all and died 31 days later.
