ROCKLAND – The Maine Elks Association has announced the winners of the Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarships for 2006. Seven high school seniors from across the state were awarded four-year scholarships of $1,000 each year, made possible through the Elks National Foundation.

The students also qualified to compete at the national level, with the potential of receiving a four-year scholarship of $60,000.

Winners were Traci L. Underhill, sponsored by the Bangor Lodge; Celia C. Bath Lodge; Kristin M. Stobo, Wells Lodge; Kelly J. Owen, Gardiner Lodge; Sam D. Dow, Bangor Lodge; Shawn M. Picard, Millinocket Lodge; and Kurtis M. Biggs, Augusta Lodge.

In addition, district winners were announced. They will each receive $2,000 one-year scholarships. Area students are: Central District, Amanda R. Burgess and Nicholas M. Daggett, Lewiston Lodge; Coastal District, Katherine W. Bessey, Bath Lodge, and Simon W. Skold, Brunswick Lodge.

The state association will distribute $18,000, or $818 to each lodge winner.

The following area lodge winners are: Mallory Brown, Rumford; Vennessa Clark, Farmington; Michael Lacasse, Skowhegan-Madison; and Justin Richardson, Lewiston.
