LEWISTON – Maine Arbor Week will be celebrated by the Lewiston-Auburn Community Forest Board at 12 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, on the walking bridge between Railroad Park and Bonney Park, symbolizing “L-A Together.”
Maine Department of Conservation Commissioner Patrick McGowan will present three-year Tree City USA certificates to Mayor Normand W. Guay of Auburn and Mayor Lionel C. Guay Jr. of Lewiston.
Jan Ames-Santerre, the Maine Forest Service Project Canopy representative, will also be on hand to present a tree to each city.
As a demonstration of community spirit, sixth-grade children from Auburn’s Sherwood Heights School will plant a tree in Railroad Park, and sixth-graders from Lewiston’s Martel School will plant a tree in Bonney Park.
To be recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation, a city must have a tree board, a community tree ordinance, a community forest program and an Arbor Day observation and proclamation. Lewiston and Auburn first qualified in 2004.
